The latest internet sensation is Cats. No, not the cute, cuddly killing machines. But the movie Cats. Suffice to say that the movie is atrociously bad with critics panning it left and right. It’s so bad that the innovative critic reviews seem more entertaining than the movie. Of course when a movie gets panned so badly then the studio comes out with a age old tactic- convincing movie going audiences that the critics are wrong.

This isn’t the “so bad, it’s good” movie. Cats is just bad, yes hilariously bad, but bad nonetheless. This reflects in its box for earnings as well. Cats brought in a measly $6.5 million over its first domestic week and a measly $4 million from the international markets. Given that the budget was $100 million, this is a disaster for Universal.

Universal Is Blaming Critics Now

Universal is now saying that the people who don’t like the movie are wrong. This is a bold movie from the studio simply because there isn’t a single soul who has actually genuinely enjoyed the movie. People generally love to hate it but that’s pretty much it. So who is this message targeted to, is a mystery. You can check out the tweet below:

What Universal should lean into right now is realise how unique kind of a disaster Cats is. If Universal can play their cards right then Cats can become a cult classic like how The Room was. “I did not hit her, I did not hit her, I did not…oh Hi Mark” is one of the greatest dialogues from The Room of all time. Universal can have something like this too!
