In episode 9 of Marvel’s What If…?, the Watcher introduces Black Widow to a new universe that has no presence of Ultron in it. Natasha Romanoff was perhaps a late addition to the team of Guardians of the Multiverse that the Watcher assembled. Apparently, Black Widow proved to be one of the characters that bring the difference in the timeline and defeat Ultron. As a result, Natasha Romanoff gets an opportunity to land a universe that does not have the murderous android in it.

Everyone Returns To Their Universe Except Black Widow

Natasha Romanoff is the one who saved the Multiverse in Marvel’s What If…? episode 8. In the sacred timeline, the events of Age of Ultron took place differently as Ultron took the body of Vision and killed most of the Avengers. As a result, it was only Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff who were the lone survivors and fought the Ultron army. However, Ultron manages to acquire all the Infinity Stones and wipe out the Multiverse. Guardians of the Multiverse and Natasha Romanoff finally get to defeat Ultron and the Watcher decides to make everyone return to their respective universe – except Natasha Romanoff.

The Watcher transports Black Widow to the universe of What If…? episode 3 that does not have any traces of Ultron in it. In that universe, Hank Pym kills Tony Stark, Thor, Bruce Banner, Clint Barton, and Natasha Romanoff before they could assemble. When Natasha arrives in the universe, she finds herself amidst Nick Fury’s replacement Avengers. Despite how messy this universe is Natasha lands and opts to fight Loki. Better for Natasha Romanoff, this universe does not have to deal with Ultron as Tony Stark is already dead.

With that said, Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, also has some cosmic knowledge and that is why she is aware of the Watcher and the concept of the Multiverse. This is what makes Natasha become one of the most pivotal heroes in the Multiverse.
