Whoopi Goldberg is known for her role in the Oscar-nominated and critically acclaimed film, The Color Purple. The actress and comedian was recently involved in a controversy when she made tone-deaf remarks about the holocaust on the talk show, The View. As a result of her comments, Whoopi was suspended from the show two weeks following the incident. However, the suspension did not impact her net worth, and the actress remains a millionaire.

Despite being Jewish, the actress stated in January,

“Let’s be truthful, the Holocaust isn’t about race, it’s not. It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about. These are two groups of white people. You’re missing the point … let’s talk about it for what it really is. It’s about how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, Jews … everybody eats each other.”

Her statements were made in response to the removal of Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel, Maus from the syllabus by the Tennessee-based McMinn County School Board.

After receiving backlash, she apologized for her statements on Twitter and stated,

“On today’s show I said the Holocaust’ is not about race, but about man’s inhumanity to man’. I should have said it is about both. As Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League shared, “The Holocaust was about the Nazi’s systematic annihilation of the Jewish people- who they deemed to be an inferior race.” I stand corrected…The Jewish people worldwide have always had my support and will never waiver. I am sorry for the hurt I have caused… Written with my sincerest apologies… Whoopi Goldberg”

Despite her apology, the actress was still fired from the ABC show. However, the controversy did not impact her finances since the comedian has a net worth of $60 million as of June 2022. Such a high net worth can only be explained by her highly successful career in Hollywood over the years. Apart from starring in the Academy Award-winning film and one of the best book-to-movie adaptations, The Color Purple, the actress has also acted in films such as Ghost, Sister Act, Furlough, Nobody’s Fool, and 9/11.
