It’s actually quite strange that the first teaser for Thor: Love and Thunder don’t showcase Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, and every hint is that there might be a fine reason for Gorr’s absence in the teaser. Marvel fans have waited long for the release of the trailer of Thor: Love and Thunder, and now, the release gives us a first look at the movie and its storyline, which also has franchise star Natalie Portman wielding Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir.

The forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie will be resuming Thor’s story post Avengers: Endgame, while also adding some newer characters to the evolving franchise.

Who are the new characters in Thor: Love and Thunder?

There are some new characters that are set to be introduced in Thor: Love and Thunder. These include Zeus, which will be played by Russell Crowe, alongside Gorr the God Butcher, who will be played by Christian Bale, although the teaser barely reveals anything about the two characters. While we get a brief glimpse at Zeus, there is no sign of Gorr the God Butcher in Love and Thunder‘s trailer, or even any reference to his place within its storyline. Instead, the trailer focuses more on Chris Hemsworth’s titular hero and where he stands post-Endgame alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy.

It’s really interesting that the supposed big villain of the film, Gorr is not present in the trailer, and how it paints the story for Love and Thunder. The entire focus is on Thor and making no reference to any villain looks like a really clever way of resuming the marketing of the film. While we compare it to other Marvel movies, we really don’t know much about Thor: Love and Thunder, and Gorr being absent in the teaser is a way to subvert the expectations of fans.

While the villain being absent might look odd in the first go, the focus of the teaser on Guardians of the Galaxy and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is quite a subtle way of giving fans the overall tone of Thor: Love and Thunder. Natalie Portman’s Thor appearing in the teaser is brief, but it does set her up to take the place of Chris Hemsworth. The absence of Gorr hints that he’s not actually Thor’s primary focus in the movie and the whole emphasis will be on Thor’s backstory and the eventual passing of the torch from Hemsworth to Natalie Portman.

How Gorr will exactly factor into Thor: Love and Thunder‘s storyline isn’t something revealed by the teaser, or even hinted at. Gorr’s overall absence from the teaser is quite disappointing for those fans who were actually hoping to get the first look at Christian Bale’s villain in the MCU, however, this move does continue the trend set by previous films where there is some wait for the trailer’s release by building a bit more anticipation for the movie itself. We can’t deny that the entire emphasis on Thor’s journey seems like a really interesting prospect, Gorr the God Butcher’s appearance is going to be one of the last big reveals for Thor: Love and Thunder.
