As we all know, the first trailer for Captain Marvel is out and it may have shown Carol Danvers reaching the height of her powers by “going binary”.

The ending of the trailer shows Danvers glowing with power. She has a halo-like aura around her and we can her eyes sparkling with light. This happens when Danvers absorbs enough energy to reach her “Binary Form.” This transformation from doubles her superhuman stamina, strength, and other capabilities.

The Binary form originated during Danvers’ time with the X-Men in the Marvel comics. Rogue stole her powers and this made Carol stay with Professor X so that he could study her and figure out a way to reverse Rogue’s mutant power effects.

During her stay with the X-Men, they all ended up as captives in space to the alien race, Brood. The Brood used X-Men and Carol for experimentation. One of these experiments unloved Danvers’ potential powers stored in her genes. This experiment transformed her into Binary, blessing her with cosmic power. However, this also severed Denver’s emotional connection to Earth and its people. She joined the space pirate group called Starjammers and stayed in space.

She later returned to Earth and used her cosmic powers to stop the Earth’s Sun from dying. This caused her to lose a lot of strength and when she recovered, it was still at a depleted power level. This didn’t stop her from fighting and she continued to fight alongside The Avengers, first as Warbird and later as Ms Marvel before becoming Captain Marvel. It was during this time that she found out that she can absorb energy and charge her DNA. By absorbing enough energy, she can temporarily gain her Binary form, doubling her power.

This is exactly what seems to be happening in one of the scenes in the trailer for Captain Marvel. The film will, of course, ignore the X-Men and Brood storyline but the ability to absorb and transform is certainly there in the film.

Captain Marvel hits the theatres on March 8, 2019.
