Between good box office numbers, a torrent of releases, and a slow invasion of prestigious award shows – it’s safe to assume that superhero movies are now a part of the greater cinematic zeitgeist. Over the past decade, Marvel Studios has risen to become the undeniable king of this genre, producing more movies than anyone else, while receiving the best reception from both critics and audiences alike.

However, not all superhero films are preceded by so much excitement and many are followed by extreme disappointment. Today, we rank the five WORST superhero films to be ever made.

5. Spider-Man 3

Raimi’s initial two “Spider-Man” films are often seen as two of the best superhero movies ever made. So what happened after that? Well, Raimi didn’t really get to make the movie as he really wanted to. This is the case with so many superhero films – the studio inserted itself way too much into the film’s making, even insisting that the villain Venom should be in the film, which already had two villains that Raimi wanted to work with — the Sandman and Harry Osborn (who becomes the second Green Goblin after his father’s death in Spider-Man).

Raimi’s trilogy had been effectively working towards Harry’s transformation, and Sandman eventually played to Raimi’s interests as a horror filmmaker. Venom being shoehorned into the film was a recipe for disaster, resulting in a cluttered plot including one of the worst scenes in superhero movie history, in which Peter Parker dances in a jazz club to make Mary Jane jealous, creeping out everyone while at it.

4. Fantastic Four (2015)

A movie which was so bad that it ruined any chance of director Josh Trank making a “Star Wars” film, Fox’s reboot of “Fantastic Four” tried to take the team in a more edgy direction than the 2005 film. It seemed like a recipe for success — Trank had just made the critically acclaimed “Chronicle,” and the film’s cast with Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan was quite impressive.

However, nothing could have saved this disaster from its horrible storyline and special effects. The film has 9% on Rotten Tomatoes and perhaps that’s even being gentle.

3. Supergirl (1984)

After “Superman III” was released worldwide, as a DC fan, you’d think no one would be crazy enough to invest in a spin-off.

Well, “Supergirl” was made nonetheless, which sees Superman’s cousin Kara coming to Earth to track down a Kryptonian power source and ending up fighting … a witch? It’s still not clear. Supergirl currently stars in a CW TV series.

2. Elektra (2005)

While “Wonder Woman” finally proved that a female-led superhero film could be both financially successful and critically acclaimed, films that were made prior to that had not been given their fair shot to female superheroes at the big screen.

It’s quite surprising that “Elektra” was even made at that time, since it is a spin-off of “Daredevil,” which wasn’t really a success.

  1. Catwoman

Pitof hasn’t helmed a film since “Catwoman” and that makes sense if you waste your time on this atrocious film. Halle Berry recently said that “Catwoman” “deserves another chance” because “behind every ‘Black Panther’ is a great black Catwoman.”

However, this movie is hardly a Catwoman film. Her real name in the film isn’t even Selina Kyle (which is Catwoman’s actual name in the comic books). This film’s faults go way beyond any comic nitpicking. The acting, the effects, the dialogue, the plot (which involves poison skincare and make-up products for some reason). It’s all one BIG DISASTER.
